Heather M. Herrman Literature & Fiction Editorial Review
The Corpse Queen is a dark and macabre historical thriller that takes readers on a journey through the disturbing lack of ethics in the nineteenth-century medical profession. The story revolves around Molly Green, an orphaned girl who is rescued from a life of misery and abuse by her estranged and extremely wealthy aunt, Ava, who is known as the Corpse Queen. Ava has built her empire by stealing corpses and selling them to medical students, and she wants Molly to help her procure the bodies. The mid-1800s was the beginning of scientific invention, and the author does an excellent job of detailing the time period and the gruesome study of anatomy and cadaver dissection at that time. The plot is expertly crafted, with a murder mystery that keeps readers guessing until the very end. Despite being shelved as Young Adult fiction, the book has many aspects that will appeal to adult readers who enjoy macabre stories. Molly is a strong and believable female lead who is fierce, independent, curious, and inventive. The supporting characters are also well-written and stand out as individual gems. Overall, The Corpse Queen is a captivating and original story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
