- Help protect an electric fence energizer from damaging lightning surges with the Gallagher Lightning Diverter. Installed between the fence and grounding system, the device gives a high-voltage spike an alternate path to earth before it reaches the energizer. Two terminals are separated by a carefully sized air gap. Normal fence pulses remain on the intended circuit, while the much higher voltage from a lightning event can jump the gap and travel toward the ground system. The diverter attaches to a fence post and can be used with any type of electric fence energizer, making it a practical protective component for new installations and upgrades. It is designed to withstand multiple lightning strikes, reducing the chance that a single event will leave livestock without an operating fence or lead to an avoidable energizer repair. Gallagher recommends fitting permanent energizers with a lightning diverter as part of the overall system design. Correct grounding, wire routing and installation are essential for the device to work as intended. The diverter helps reduce lightning risk but cannot prevent every type of surge damage.
